Edit: We tried it on a desktop layout and although we were only trying to fit it on a sheet of 8x11 folded paper, were they too heavy and wouldn't stand. I then tried a one spot card (a business card our size) and it wouldn't stay up even with the slightest bump (not to mention it was a balancing act to keep it up). Unfortunately I'm now 5 days past the return policy so it looks like I'm stuck with a completely useless item. Avoid this at all costs. I bought them to hold signs on our wedding tables. The manufacturer's packaging is terrible and not suitable for shipping. All items were shipped disassembled, more than half are broken. You could fix it with a little soldering. They are also made with no regard for quality control, each socket has a hole drilled in various places, some in the center, some on the edge. If you only have paper to hold you should be fine, but if it's a little heavier the off-center hole holders will likely fall off easily. They'll probably work for what we need them for, but you'll find the trash can right after reception.
