The Thunderbolt ports on my 2018 Macbook Pro don't cope with connecting a hub, connected USB devices just don't communicate properly. This ensured flawless communication performance and increased the number of available USB ports. A design flaw is that the device only connects via two USB 3.0 "Thunderbolt" ports that plug into the side of the Macbook. It can be easily damaged, so it should only be used when the laptop is placed on a table or other surface (not on your lap!) to prevent the mechanical aspect of the connection from bending/twisting/twisting.
