There is a small indentation on the back so you can take a coin to open it and put the batteries in. Quarters and nickels are too big. You need a penny or a penny. I disassembled the first one and can't open it. They're useless if they don't have batteries. Although it comes with batteries. Now I have 3 working blocks and the last one is in the trash. They can either be hung or you can lower the hanger and use it in place of a stand. They're not backlit at all, but the numbers are big. I have 2 fridges in my house so I needed all 4. Well. I was very upset that 1 didn't open. I took a flat pair of tweezers and opened them up. They are all standing side by side in the room reading 80.8, 80.1, 80.8 and 80.6. My house thermostat reads 78. Along with these 4 thermometers are my trusty portable temperature gauges/clocks. It's reading 79.4 and it's all happening on the other side of the house than the thermostat. I think the temperature readings on them are pretty close.
