This little Moai mold worked SUPER! I did notice a chemical smell when I first took it out of the box, but before using it I soaked the mold in a solution of baking soda and water overnight, then rinsed it in the sink along with the rest of the dirty dishes Dishwasher and the next morning the smell was hardly noticeable. It did NOT affect the taste of the chocolates I made in the mold. My friends liked them! (UPDATE: 3 days later, the smell is almost completely gone.) Instead of making ice cubes (which I thought would only last a few minutes), I made candy bars and placed one for each square serving of dark chocolate brownies. To make candies I melted milk chocolate chips and (after seeing another user's excellent suggestion) chopped up chocolate rice cereal and added to the melted chocolate for a crunchy effect, adding granularity. However, next time I make this, I'll split the melted chocolate into two batches, first filling the mold halfway with plain chocolate and then adding rice grain chocolate to fill the rest of the cavity. I think this will help retain more detail about the Moai's characteristics (which were lovely without having to do it the first time). Then, when I took them out, they emerged in stunning detail. To ensure good detail you need to make sure you don't have small air pockets in the chocolate. This can be avoided by running a toothpick over the melted chocolate in the mold in the same way you pierce wet cake batter with a knife to remove air bubbles as the cake bakes. It is necessary. If the chocolate is very cold, the candy or ice cream should just pop out of the mold - and it helps that the mold is very flexible. I just popped them straight out of the back of each section. If you're using an ice cube tray, it's a good idea to place something flat like a small cutting board under the freezer transport tray due to the flexibility of the tray. tiki-phile I'm very happy with it and plan to order more to increase my productivity on my next app, or just to give as gifts to friends! Enjoy! Fun idea: chocolate moai scattered around a volcano-shaped chocolate cake (with red and orange lava frosting on the sides!) makes an AWESOME dessert for a tiki party!
