Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good product. with an unfortunate error

We have 6 properties for rent, manage 4 more and hope to have more soon. Key management became a challenge as we have 4 sets of keys for each property (my car, my wife's car, our office suite and the renter's set). In order to re-encrypt the property, 5 sets of keys had to be replaced. This lock made the process a lot easier as we now only keep 1 master key in each car and 1 in the office. We also keep 1 copy of the tenant key in our office. When we re-encrypt keys, we simply swap tenant keys from one house to another, so we don't actually have to buy new keys. And our master will always work. It was a 10 second process re-coding each lock to use the same master key so it was easy. It will be just as easy to re-enter tenant keys in the future. The only problem was that now I only have 1 copy of the lock pick. If I lost it, I'd have to buy a replacement bracket and disassemble each lock to put the key on the new lockpick. Not perfect. This is where it got SUPER disappointing for me. Trying to get a copy of the master key was a nightmare. It is very similar in shape to the tenant key but is so different that the tenant key does not work. The Tenant Key uses the "KW1" key style, which can be crafted on any computer with keys or at a hardware store. The master key uses the "816" style with the Kwikset model number 83382. If you take the master key to a key kiosk or hardware store, they will think it's the same as the KW1 and copy it for you. It won't work, believe me I've tried: Walmart, Lowe's, Home Depot, Minute Key and KeyMe. I called the local locksmith and they didn't know anything about the "816" key. Revain and found someone to say he needed to order keys from Kwikset and provided a phone number (thanks!). I called Kwikset and the CS agent was very polite and offered to mail me 4 blank master keys free of charge. It's great because at that moment I was very upset. But wait, that's not all! After ordering replacement keys, the CS agent said the keys were delayed by 6-8 weeks! I searched the internet for other ways to buy keys. HomeDepot showed I could buy 10 for $2.38, cool I will. I placed an order but the website gave me an error. I called CS and they said the website is wrong and they are in fact out of stock. Elsewhere on the web, it took $15 to $30 for a key. So I am very careful with my key and wait 6-8 weeks with fingers crossed. If I can get them I'll have to find a locksmith to cut them for me. I really hope this is easier than what I've been through so far! I suggested to the CS agent that they could make this easier by just putting an empty key in a box with a lock. If you then need a copy of that master key or a master key for another lock, you can have a locksmith make one for you. I hope they do so in the future.
