The packaging has a smell of rubber tires but I'm sure it will go away in a few days and others have written previous suggestions about washing and such . And you might have a hard time finding a use for an outside pocket. But the big plus for me, besides the price, is that I can put an iPad mini in it without removing the iPad from its "working" case. I have an iPad holder at home that has a strap on the back which makes it so easy to hold. And I have a waterproof case that I use when navigating the water with my iPad. When hiking, rowing or other trips, when I'm not using the iPad, it's nice when it's well protected. This, of course, must be the work of these outer sheaths. But this case offers a little more protection from things that might accidentally come into contact with it.
