I had one of those "regular" slicers that look like this, but the oversized apple and strong will broke it :D So I needed a new one. I just picked this one at random, it seemed similar, and love that there was a choice of shortcuts. And to be honest, I figured that part wasn't going to work anyway. I have one of those suction attachments that rotates a peeling/coring/slicing knife with one handle, but I don't often want to dig up a large single apple attachment. When I used it, what luck! Dial setting worked! and not just once! The blades are just as strong for wide cuts as they are for narrow cuts. And the BEST thing is the lid! I used to break my old knife, turn it over and push each piece out with my finger (otherwise they would break off while the knife was still in). It was unwise to press my fingers so close to those blades, but I did. anyway.) With that I attach the apple directly to the lid, place the protrusions (I wish they weren't there, but I think they should be) and press. The cutter has two notches that need to line up with the corresponding indentations in the lid, so sometimes you have to stop at the bottom and twist it a bit to get it pushed all the way into the lid. But then the fruit is completely cut and easy to remove. It's a bit harder to clean than my old one. If you leave it on the table for too long after cutting it (I'll admit it :D), the apple casings will get stuck. There is a small seam where the spinning blades connect and the apple pieces get stuck there. I just give it a really good rinse (running water washes away most of the water) and if necessary put my finger between the blades (from the top) to clean it. I usually put it on a paper towel to dry, or actually dry it when I put it away. It seems that the blades CAN rust in the dishwasher (I haven't tried it, but it happens sometimes with thin stainless steel) so I don't put them there. Basically I am more than satisfied. I wish it was a little bigger as my favorite apples (honey chips) don't always fit (they were BIG this year). If they made one bigger I would buy it too!
