I recently discovered 5D crystal painting and it has risen to the top of my favorite crafts, surpassing coloring. It's similar to paint-by-numbers, only using small, flat-backed "crystals" (which can be opaque or transparent, round or square). Each project has a pre-printed scene and you may only 'paint' part of the image, or maybe you 'paint' 100%. There is already a layer of glue on the part of the picture that you are "painting". It's covered in a sheet of plastic that you only want to open on the parts you're working on so the dust and oil from your skin doesn't ruin the glue. Each color of the crystal corresponds to a number, letter or symbol in the picture. Pick up the crystals with the "pen" provided and apply them to the corresponding squares in the picture. Also included is a small pink square of "pencil" glue to help collect the crystals (although I've completed literally dozens of these projects and am still on my first square of glue. The last thing included is a Tray). to scatter crystals (one color at a time). I've always had way more crystals than I need, but that's good because these things fly very easily if they aren't hit properly or ignored. Some projects I bought came with craft tweezers. I rarely use them, but when I need to try and find a crystal that's glued on they really help.. Here's what I learned to look for before buying: 1. Actual Image Size - Ignore images displayed at home They are very misleading as to the size of the project. Many are displayed on the wall behind the sofa and look many feet long but may only be a foot long. Confidence from the description.2. Which part of the picture is actually "paintable"? Always look at the pictures provided by the seller and ask if they don't show any work in progress. I've had these before that literally took me 30 minutes to complete because it was a very small part of the picture that was 'painted' and only a few colors. On the other hand, be careful if the project is 100% "drawable" as it is very time consuming. I personally have nothing against these guys, but just know what you're buying so you won't be disappointed. The number of colors - the more the better, because that's what makes the process fun. I've found that I get bored easily when there are large areas of the same color in a project. This is an area where vendors could do better disclosure. Shape of the crystals - I find that I like the round shape more than the square shape as it's a lot more forgiving in terms of placement on the adhesive. This gives the glue a little, so you can press the placed crystals a little. Product Location - Many of the suppliers that carry these are located outside of the US which means shipping can be very slow. One thing that helps me with this type of ship is the Darice Clear Bead Container with 24 storage jars. I label each jar lid with a crystal color symbol and then store the crystals inside until I need them. They're easy to pour and pour, and if I just need a few crystals I can just leave them in the jar and not use the tray. It's just personal preference, but I find it very useful. This peacock with fluffy tail feathers was very funny. The crystals are round and clear with a shiny silver backing that really makes them sparkle. There are 18 colors in total, which is a lot for this type of project. The drawing part of this image is the whole bird, I would say it is 80% of the image. The painting is 10-1/2 square. i really like this one.
