I recently replaced my mid 2013 MacBook Pro. When booting into Ubuntu to erase the SSD, I noticed a red light coming from the headphone jack. Some research has shown that this is a TOSLINK interface built into the 3.5 inch headphone jack. I had no idea! I decided to use my old laptop as a music server. Using the cable is very simple: plug it into your MacBook and OSX headphone jack. automatically switches the audio output to digital. Although my configuration required other settings (such as using Bit Perfect from the App Store to dynamically change output speed and depth), none of these had anything to do with this cable. The cable works fine in this application.
