Simply put, the top of the mailbox does not fit the bottom. The base is exactly 12 inches wide. The top, which needs to fit into the corners and grooves of the base, is 12 7/8 inches wide. At first I thought I could bend the top and slide it into the base's groove. It takes a lot of force to push it through 7/8" but it can be done (with the help of my son who is a strong young man). The problem is that once the top cap is in the groove in the base, it doesn't stay there, it slides out on its own. It never snaps securely enough for me to screw in screws to hold it in place forever Place the groove and the sharp side of the groove faces backwards to lock the top securely. Just bad mechanical design otherwise I got a defective top cap which shouldn't be 12 7/8" wide. .It's a shame. Otherwise it's a nice product but the parts don't match. I'm afraid it's coming return!
