Review on Icy Dock Tool-Less Drive Adapter Converter Bracket Mounting Frame Tray for 2.5 Inch HDD/SSD with SATA III Interface - EZConvert MB882SP-1S-1B by Chris Long

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Overall good but the spring pressure on the top of the drive is an issue

This was an easy way to install a 2.5" drive in one 3.5" bay without worrying about airflow issues (the small drive doesn't offer enough resistance and fears it will affect airflow through hotter 3.5" drives). It still lets in too much air compared to a 3.5" drive in the same bay. , but it's not as bad as if I just left the drawer with a bare 2.5-inch drive. He took off a star because I'm concerned about the metal spring that supposedly holds the disc. I put the disc in to check the fit and immediately took it out. In just a minute or so the label on the drive was dented right where the spring rested on the top of the drive because something was constantly pushing so that h was on the top of the drive without even bothering to distribute the load, but simply by pressing on two points. I think a plastic or metal load balancer would help a lot here. Luckily I'm going to use them "flat" so I don't need that spring to hold my discs in place (the plastic interface connector doesn't need that spring nor the rod that the spring pivots on), so I have I remove the offending spring. They now hold my drives in place by pressing them against the internal connector (they are held horizontally by gravity - I would use something else that doesn't put additional point loads on the top of the drive to hold them when I use it would put them on the side) and I have an easy way to deal with drives used in an existing hot-swap backplane that has numerous 3.5" drives.

Pros
  • Test for one year
Cons
  • Don't really like it, everything is fine
