Review on High-Performance Magnum Thistle Feeder - Woodlink Model MAG2 by Stacey Jones

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Simple design, easy to clean and fill

This is a value for money Thistle feeder. It has a simple construction with a plastic top, plastic bottom shell, and wire mesh held together by a metal rod and hanging chain. The entire feeder weighs approximately 14 ounces unloaded and holds 4 liters of thistle feed. I find it easy to clean, although you can't completely disassemble the feeder as the mesh is attached to the bottom plastic bowl fairly securely. A nice feature is that the bottom tray has 4 evenly spaced drainage holes to prevent water from pooling in the tray, which helps prevent mold growth in the seeds. The only downside is that on windy days the synthetic upper tends to catch the wind and can lift. This can be secured with a zip tie or a small stick and inserted into the hanging chain link just above the cover. UPDATE: 11/18/2010 - A few things. First, the "drain holes" in the bottom are virtually useless as the thistle seeds collect in the bottom tray, clogging the holes and preventing water from draining away. This results in a gooey mess of thistle seed that stays there until you scoop it out. Another thing is that there are a lot of seeds in the feeder. Thistle seeds are expensive. If the seed stays in the feeder too long because there are not enough birds in the feeder, it will start to stick together and eventually mold will start to develop. It becomes a waste of seeds and money. If instead you only partially fill the feeder to mitigate this problem, the birds that visit the feeder will not have enough seed. So I think if you are concerned about this you might want to go for a smaller sperm donor.
