I really hate sticking a rope between my teeth. In fact, little is more annoying. Of course, before I discovered this device, I paid for it at the dentist's, I had to have a novocaine shot and have my gums cleaned thoroughly, although in good faith I used an electric toothbrush every night. Once I started using the irrigator every night, first it and then the electric toothbrush, I haven't had to floss since, except for the obvious things I'm feeling. It's been two years since I had that horrible deep cleaning and all four of my follow up visits have been flawless and have impressed my dentist. no tooth decay, no plaque, not a single drop of blood on the plastic bib. However, there are two things to note about this device. First, if you want to avoid flossing like I did, fill the reservoir almost full with water, then add a full capful of mouthwash before use (don't add mouthwash first or it will foam all over!). Secondly, it is very important, when you are done, pour the excess liquid onto the bottom and turn the tank upside down to allow both it and the bottom to dry. If you leave the tank on the base, mold will form around the edges and be very difficult to remove. I used my first device almost daily for about a year and a half before the pump motor stopped working; I'm sure it could still work if I didn't leave the tank on all the time. I will take much better care of this replacement device and continue to get good dental reviews!
