I had the same wood cracking problem just starting to screw the screws in by hand. Which is annoying, but I might reconsider. But what I don't understand is why the tree isn't aligned properly. There is a noticeable gap. And it's odd that the top and bottom are barely connected to a panel by two tiny screws. Why couldn't they give you more tiny screws so you can actually screw the two pieces together? Because if you try to lift it at the top, it will come loose and break if you're not careful. You'll have to raise the bottom or do what I did and get more small screws to make it really secure. But despite those odd issues, it was easy to build and surprisingly durable (unless you put a thousand things on it). I wouldn't buy it again but I'm still keeping what I have because it actually looks decently nice and if you put something in it you won't notice any cracks or splits. So the product is so-so.
