Review on Noctua NF-A8 PWM - Premium Quiet Fan, 80mm, 4-Pin (Brown) by Brian Smith

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Absolutely silent at low numbers

Obviously they are much better than the stock Nidec fans in this SuperMicro JBOD. Deducted a few stars because I had to modify the hot-swap cartridge (it's designed for 36mm, these are for 25mm, the thicker ones are out of stock). I also had to grind down one of the key pins on the 4 pin connector. It was designed for a 3-pin slot, but the existing connectors only fit the connector with the tabs on the end. In the last picture you can see that Noctua has no top pins that allow the cartridge to gently detach the fan. So when I pull on it, I have to remember to hold the cord as well. Up to three fans were completely silent. When I added the 4th they started singing a bit, but when all the 7's are in place there's still no comparison to the original 50dB thug.

Pros
  • Brilliantly made
Cons
  • Some problems
