Update 09/20/20: Febreze worked. So far it hasn't worked. It's a really horrible smell. I'm not sure if Febreze helped at all or made things worse. If you are sensitive to chemical odors I would not recommend this product. I bought this as a temporary storage solution for bath towels. This is great because they tend to be pretty sturdy and hold a reasonable amount. My bath towels fit perfectly and there is even room for my second bed linen. My only complaint is the terrible chemical smell. It seems to be something I've been experiencing more and more often lately. This is just awful! Luckily I was able to air this item out for a few days and it helped, but the smell didn't go away completely. I decided that instead of returning it I would mist it with Febreze, although I'm hoping the smell will eventually go away so I don't have to keep doing it. Chemical smell aside, this seems like a great product.
