I have a Surface 6 with a UAG cover. The UAG is a great protective case, but renders almost all portable docking stations useless as the cover houses the USB and video ports. Separate connections here solve this problem. I've used this with external USB drives and HDMI monitors with great success. This is an external power outlet that is not normally needed unless your USB accessory draws a lot of power. I have a partner who uses an external USB monitor that requires a power supply. You need a 5V DC power adapter with 3.5*1.35mm DC plug. I would give 5 stars but the key for the plug is a bit short and the cords are a little fiddly to plug in but that's not a problem. I also wish there was an AC adapter included, or at least some indication of what specifically to buy.
