About twenty years ago I bought some outlet covers that had an EL panel built in. When I moved to this apartment I looked for them, but in principle they were not available. So I bought them instead. They do their job just as well, putting out about the same amount of light, but occupying one outlet. When the lights are first turned off they don't seem overly bright, but once your eyes adjust to the night they give off enough light to move around safely, which is all you could ask for.
