I built a 9 foot tall wooden shelving unit for our kids room. The base and shelves were converted furniture that we kept around the house. We installed them and built the structural supports for the trunk. Wooden dowels served as internal support for the limbs and I used wire mesh to create the shape of the torso and limbs. It took over a month to add enough layers of paper mache to create a realistic bark texture on the tree's surface. Once I was satisfied and we had varnished the structure I looked for a sealant that would create a hard enough shell to keep the wood from collapsing, when the child is old enough to play around with it. This seal was effective and durable. I've added additional layers over the areas where we touch them frequently (inside the shelves and cover). I would have added more layers but some areas are slightly opaque/whitish due to too much sealer. I am thrilled with the result and look forward to the next project!
