Although I wish it was a little larger (measurements are correct) it catches and holds dirt very well. There is still some dirt outside of the mat, but not as much as on my previous mat (which I also liked). I think the reason this works better is because the raised lugs on the mat itself are raised a bit higher so they catch dirt on the paws and then trap it in the mat. Although I suppose some cats can jump over the mat as some other reviewers have noted (I don't think it will hurt their paws, they may not find it as comfortable as a flat surface). my little buddy can't because the tray is in a small alcove in my apartment (to get in and out of the tray he has to walk on the mat, there's not really enough room to jump over it).
