These shoes fascinate me. In the summer, any good fly fisherman puts aside his waders and spiked boots and wades with as little gear as the sun and bugs will allow. I took them fly fishing and roamed the water for 5 hours (see gif with typical ripples). Came home and while cleaning found the front and rear gutters. I also noticed tiny artificial cuts on the soles called "toes". The sipes make the Blizzak and X-Ice snow tires very grippy on ice, so grippy that when the green light comes on and you're starting responsibly on snow and ice, you're going 3/4 of the way down if you look in your rear view look mirrors, everything, they still play cars in the light. Yes, significant savings on insurance. My knees and ankles are not very good due to abuse and age. I'm nervous and new to slippery rocks the size of a bowling ball (or bigger). I use a swamp stick, but it gets awkward when it floats away. These waders inspire confidence in me. I found a chain of large, dark, white, mottled boulders 100 feet long in the middle of a side channel. I walked down her spine like I was walking a sidewalk, not noticing the 2 foot depth of water either side. In any case, when I returned home, for fear of possible damage to my super shoes, I found a spare pair at the local whitewater store. They only cost $90, but it wasn't an AC model. They are finished with durable mesh and lack the side panels of the AC model. I put both in my car and the next time I waded at 4am I grabbed two. I left my wading socks in the car and just put my shoes on. Pants, shirt, gloves and great shoes Simms UPF50. No bugs, no burns, no socks and no slipping. Liberation. I feel like a pair of waders a third my age in them. When I got home and grabbed my shoes to shine, I stopped. One had blue laces and the other brown. One was an AC model and the other was not. My actual transition age was displayed. I wandered around for hours not realizing I was using a primary and backup shoe. I went up a notch, fly-fished, and hiked through northern Wyoming in my running shoes for two days. I have forded three rivers and a stream. Two rivers had softball-sized rocks with loose gravel that got caught in shoes. When I emptied them, they were still crackling. Turns out the insoles come out (and come back slightly) and a dozen pebbles are hidden underneath. This is useful information because when you clean them, take out the insoles, wash and dry them separately and you're good to go. In total, I made the journey for 11 hours. They removed the skin from two toes on my left foot (I'll spare you that photo). These are brand new shoes and my feet got wet for 11 hours over the course of two days. To get to the creek, I had to walk across the Wyoming desert multiple times in late summer: no goggles, no vest, thunderstorms, etc. The mesh soles collected lots of deep-penetrating weed seeds and some fine sand. I spent half an hour with my tiny swiss army knife tweezers trying to get it off the grid. This is now my "wading gear" for the whole summer or until the water gets cold enough for neoprene boot waders and spiked waders. Seven months in heavy gear, five months barefoot in super shoes. These are inexpensive, slotted, hard-wearing, non-slip, light, easy-care, dry quickly and are comfortable. You don't drive in waders and waders! You should take off your usual gear, put on your waders and boots and open everything up if you plan to ride for a while. So you dress them up at home, drive to the parking lot "near" the river, walk there, wade and fish, come back, drive to the next place, dine at Los Cabana Del Tequila, whatever. Sneak, fish, drive, drink and eat with confidence. These things are great. Please excuse any spelling and grammatical errors, the shoes are not to blame.
