I used to feed my rescued feral cats standard supermarket cat food - Friskies, Whiskas, Meow Mix, supermarket brands, etc. They liked most of these (no one would eat Walmart Special Kitty Mark), but they had health problems like lethargy, dull-spotted coat, etc.). I've tried switching to some very expensive grain free alternatives like Wellness, Taste of the Wild, Weruva, Tiki, Nature's Balance and Blue Buffalo (who despised them even more than Special Kitty and fasted for 5 days before I quit them ) all out). Earthborn is the only high-quality, grain-free cat food that cats can eat right away. If they refuse, as they do from time to time, I bribe them with a standard Purina Gluten Filler. I think cheap cat food is like McDonalds and loaded with additives that make them crave a less healthy diet. I also add thinly sliced raw steak if it's on sale before its sell by date.
