Stinks horribly! best decor for habitat

I've been buying these Kaytee lava ledges for our pet rats for YEARS! And they've never smelled like this before. Very strong smell of petrol/turpentine. There's no way we can put them in a cage with our rats. They are meant to be chewed and I can't imagine this being a safe product to chew on. It literally stinks from a few meters away! What the hell happened?
