The holder is inserted into the ventilation opening. It holds my phone but doesn't fit my spouse's phone. (The case seems to be an issue, making it too thick for hands). The holder rattles (strongly) when the phone is not in it. The advantage of this mount is that it has a height that makes it easier to see the screen. I use a phone holder that fits in my sedan's cup holder (cup holders slide out of the dash). Since the mounts on the X5 are more between the seats, the "in-cup" mounts are too low for easy access.
