I was on a trip and someone gave me their RRS BH-55 LR clip ball head to try out. I was very impressed with the quality and smoothness of the work. I liked the lever that opens/closes the jaws for changing lenses/cameras. The largest camera/lens I use is a Canon 1DX with a 2x converter for a 300mm 2.8f fixed lens, 70-200 2.8f IS and many wide angle lenses. Once again the RRS ball worked great. I came home to buy one and found the price was $500. So I looked at a lot of reviews and found that the Sirui 40X ball head had great reviews so I took a chance and bought it for $166 tax free including shipping. I put my gear on top and headed out to shoot with a Canon 1DX with a 2x converter on a stabilized 300mm lens with 2.8 f IS. The ball was like butter, a few adjustments to accommodate the overall weight, and it moved and performed just like an RRS ball. Panning movement was also very good, with no added friction. You can add friction to the pan (or block it), but I found the factory settings to be ideal. The tension knob has a very large range so it doesn't stick or rotate 1/8 turn, you have many settings to control camera movement. At the moment I am very satisfied with the quality of this ball head and if you just don't want to spend money on equipment, you can try this ball head. I have had several Canon 400mm 2.8 IS lenses and this bullet will handle them with ease. PSI was so pleased with Sirui's quality that they also bought a Sirui N 3204X tripod, wow what a good tripod, light weight, travel friendly, very strong, very stable. , thicker carbon fiber, larger tubes than most. The tripod is large enough to shoot when needed without using the center tube (some people don't like center extension tubes). Here, too, quality throughout the design. I put my $500 tripod in the closet and now use Sirui.
