This product is good for what it is, but not really necessary. The build seems good and the install took about 15 minutes including dumping the spare and reinstalling. All you have to do is glue it in place. Turns out my 2017 Tacoma replacement part clips onto the spare tire carrier. The part of the holder that supports the spare wheel from below has a small protrusion that fits into one of the holes in the wheel. There is a hole in this bar to allow you to insert a padlock and secure the spare tire. This approach has a few advantages: 1) The padlock makes it much easier to get the wheel back under the frame because it keeps everything in place while you lift it. 2) The key for the small padlock is much easier to carry and hide than the key that comes with this item. There are also a few downsides: 1) The padlock is a little less secure because if you wanted to you could just drop the spare and cut the padlock or chain with bolt cutters. It might not matter much, however, as it would require a fairly determined thief, and everyone knows most thieves are lazy. If they weren't lazy, they'd be working or going to school like the rest of 9 to 5 instead of stealing spare tires. 2) If you don't buy the right lock, it can freeze after prolonged exposure to water, dirt, salt, and extreme temperatures. Be sure to choose a lock that is rated for outdoor or marine use.
