***UPDATE November 26, 2017*** My Nighthawk AC1900 Desktop WiFi Repeater has failed (second time). As I wrote in my last update, the bass band slowly lost power over time and then just stopped working. Changing settings and finally doing a factory reset does not improve the situation. It is clear that a device that works perfectly on my system one moment and fails without provocation the next moment is not user error. Tech support will (once again) call me to prove that the problem is in the placement of the extender relative to my router and I will (once again) prove them wrong. Or I could stop talking nonsense and throw that paperweight in the trash. As I have no way of knowing if this is common, I recommend reading the other reviews. It was a horrible experience for me. *** UPDATE November 15, 2017 *** An agonizing experience. Low-frequency performance is almost gone (5GHz still looks unaffected). I check speedtest.net and what was 25MB/s a month ago is now less than 1MB/s. I've tried rebooting and doing a full factory reset, but the condition doesn't improve. The fact that it gets worse over time is the only evidence I need to suspect the device. The prospect of contacting Netgear technical support is simply unbearable. I will use it in fastlane mode on the 5GHz band until it fails and then goes to waste. *** UPDATE 10th October 2017 *** I was initially very happy with the range extender but after reporting an experience the news is not good. My original range extender showed signs of deterioration within a month or two, but it was hard to tell if it was an environmental issue, a Comcast issue, or a hardware issue as my test results were difficult to quantify. Often a simple reboot would restore performance, so I blamed it on the cause for several months. Then I noticed that the high frequency band (5GHz) just stopped working and the speed on the low band dropped dramatically. I'm 75 feet from the R7000 router so the signal isn't the issue. Since you only get a measly 90 days of phone support, I requested a replacement as part of the 1-year hardware warranty, and that's when things got weird. I was told that I needed phone support to diagnose the issue, but support refused to take my call. Even after explaining that I'm being transferred, I still got the apology (LOUD ALERT!). It took a definite tone and a few carefully chosen words to trigger a warranty exchange and this was received about two weeks ago. When I connected this device, everything seemed to be in perfect order. Setup was easy and performance was as expected. The extension cord put out 40Mbps at a frequency of 2.7MHz! I felt relieved! Then this morning, a week later, my performance on BOTH tapes dropped by a factor of 10! I restarted the router and repeater. TWICE and the results are the same. So what has changed? is it an age issue The R7000 router continues to do a great job in the main house and I have no complaints about its performance, but this EX7000 range extender is full of nasty surprises. If this still doesn't work I'll post an update. So far I cannot recommend this product.
