Review on πŸ’ͺ Emtec X200 Power Plus 256GB mSATA SSD - Reliable Portable Solid State Drive by Dave Hess

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Suitable for Nintendo Wii U but generally gets very hot

Pros: - Suitable for use on the Nintendo Wii U game console. A USB connection to the Wii U is sufficient to run this drive with USB 2.0 connection speeds to operate is increased by the speed of the SSD. poor heat dissipation Read more: 238 GiB capacity seems right. I successfully filled the disk with files and read them without errors. The declared read speed of 450 MB/s is correct. However, I did not reach the advertised write speed of 420 MB/s. I'm seeing write speeds closer to 120MB/s when using the CrystalDiskMark test software, as in another Revain browser screenshot. Actual write speeds appear to be worse. On Windows 10, copying large files would go up to 100MB/s before dropping to 66-70MB/s after a few seconds and staying at that level (this might be related to the source drive I'm copying them to though). The device feels hot after reading or writing a few GB, and I feel like all of the heat is concentrated in about a third of the drive near the USB cable connector. It also takes a very long time (several minutes) for the heat to dissipate. Why not add aluminum for better heat distribution? That heat might not be good for an SSD. Also, the temperature readings reported to SMART (visible with CrystalDiskInfo) don't change even when the device gets very hot, so they appear to be fictitious. Can the device even properly throttle when it gets too hot? I wouldn't use this device in harsh environments due to the heat, but I will use it on my Wii U which only has slow USB 2.0. Connection.
