I have a 2003 E39 so I never need it, I've only ever used a 16 pin OBDII to USB cable with PA Soft. I recently bought an additional E39, this time from 1999, which requires a 20-pin connector under the hood, separate from the OBDII connector under the dash (the OBDII connector is only for federal emissions testers). I was skeptical about working with my PA Soft on this, but it looks like a no-brainer. Even works with my Autel MaxiDiag Elite! The cable itself is heavy which I think is a big plus, not flimsy and cheap. Be sure to buy if you come across a similar scenario.
