The red light is BRIGHT and that is what I wanted. Bright enough to read and bright enough to walk the Cades Cove Loop at Midnight where the wild life's eyes shine like stars. Definitely bright enough to find a position in the woods at Elkmont from which to watch the synchronistic fireflies (still, shine the red light at the ground for it can blind). It has 3 levels of the white light: one flood which is comfortable brightness to work in a dark room; an average spot light with which to shine on the path ahead to avoid obstacles; and then their combination which will blind anyone who looks at your face in the dark. The battery pack looks replaceable; it plugs into the system. If these (I bought two) last 6 months or more; I will buy them again 'cause it's what I need.
