They're generally relatively inexpensive, so if you're a beginner, give them a try. However, I would strongly recommend buying better quality ones. When I first used them I heard (I think) the epoxy crack where the blade meets the wooden handle. I stopped using them immediately and haven't touched them since. I don't want them to collapse under pressure and cut me or my work. I honestly don't know what to do with the set now. As for accessories, a small reel is fine, but a compound lanyard is even better. For the price, the lines can't be beat (I bought a few more to make a different line shape). So yes, get a sling, but don't buy one unless you're going to use it to carve soft clay or something. Just not strong enough for serious woodworking.
