On my second (maybe third or fourth) trip with a tripod I was looking for a ball head that was 1) good quality 2) stability 3) at a reasonable price. Based on previous experience with Manfrotto, MH496-BHUS was the leader, but I've given all other brands a fair mark. There are good ball heads, but expensive. Manfrotto MH496-BHUS is the right price and quality. The design of the ball head is excellent, very solid. There are separate controls for pan, tilt, etc. There is a smaller "screw" to control the friction of the ball head to keep it from falling off. The ball head fits perfectly with Manfrotto tripods. I have the assurance that a DSLR with a heavier lens will not fall over. I think the Manfrotto MH496-BHUS is a good choice for what I need to do.
