Review on Roku 4661RW Streaming Player Headphones by Hayden Hart

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Solid competent actor. Opens up many new possibilities for streaming

Netflix and Prime available. My Internet TV was supported by fewer and fewer platforms. This Roku Ultra lets me watch YouTube, Crackle, Orbi, Pandora, and a dozen other free streams, plus dozens more I could pay for if I wanted to. Everything is fine on the device itself. The headphone jack *on the remote* is a great idea and works well - it mutes the sound on my receiver instantly, with no delay. The volume setting then controls the headphones and restores the volume on my receiver when I unplug the headphones; It is very sweet. The included JBL headphones are only average, but deliver decent sound. Speech recognition cannot be used to control individual "apps" (streaming providers), nor does it replace typing, which I would very much like to have. When you press the microphone button and speak, a global track search is performed, regardless of which application (stream) you are using. It's like first pressing the button with the HOME icon. Speech recognition is very good, but at least once I managed to fool it and got into a situation where I had no choice but to "type" the search term letter by letter (entering it manually). It seems to work equally well with commands like "Find Galaxy" and "Galaxy" and the result is exactly the same. In other words, I don't think you need a verb, just an object. One more thing - you cannot turn off the device. It stays on in standby mode and displays the welcome screen when not in use. A screensaver option is supposed to show the time and weather if you give it a zip code, but that part doesn't work. Shows only the time. Those minor quirks aside, this is a good buy.

Pros
  • The most powerful and feature-rich media player for HD/4K/HDR streaming
Cons
  • Wall socket required
