I ordered a Big Berkey through Revain in September 2017. The description said "Seller: Revain.com Services, Inc. has no cosmetic scratches or imperfections. Item has no cracks or The Berkey arrived with a small dent in the case that I could live with. Then when I put it back together I found that both of the black plastic wing nuts had snapped off. Buying new online was quite expensive ($30 for a spares kit) and I read a link that said wing nuts could be secured with tape so I did that and it seemed to work stripped wing nuts but I figured they were forcing me to send everything back which would be difficult as I have no car was to do what i didn't was red food c color test berkey black filters are capable of red dyes 40 and 3 (but no other colors or natural n dyes) to filter out; Once the unit is assembled and red food coloring is added to the water in the upper chamber, this will help determine if the system is filtering properly. The water turned red even after I bought new wing nuts and asked my husband to tighten them (they were meant to be finger tightened, not pliers, the ones supplied were probably ripped off by the ones that had them before me). I also noticed that both filters had a few scratches and small chips on the top, which of course I didn't notice. Test for red food coloring RIGHT NOW and hope your 30-day guarantee is honored. Now I have no choice but to go to Burke and buy new filters for $120 and hope they work. At least when I buy them from Berkey they are covered under warranty! But it makes me sick to think that for the last year and a half I have carefully NOT filtered our tap water and run it through tap water too! :(
