Knowing Shimano's reputation first hand, this Shimano Altus should be dependable in form and function. It benefits from the company's 'Trickle Down' technology, where technical advances in the top-of-the-line Dura-Ace and XTR lines are eventually carried over to lower-end models. Unfortunately I had to return this part due to the weight. Sure, it would provide smooth operation and would generally be a good replacement for a worn switch. Also, barring any psychological damage, extra grams of weight won't be noticeable. But my application is part of an overall effort to make my bike lighter and this component was an unfortunate choice on my part. Shimano's product line remains decent; As a side note, I ordered a Shimano Ultegra 6800 GS road derailleur instead, which should improve shifting performance MUCH with weight loss on my vintage small mountain bike.
