Buyer Beware — This Killed My Cat

I had purchased these toys (the red and yellow rubber chews) when we got our first cat because he was chewing on things around the house, and he seemed to fair well with these redirects. So when we adopted our second kitten a couple of years later, we used these again because he was demonstrating similar behavior. We thought these toys would help encourage him to not chew on things he shouldn't, but he honestly didn't care much for the toy.Flash forward a couple of months, and I find the toy disintegrated on the ground with pieces notably missing. We take our kitty to the vet and have radiographs taken. The vet confirmed there was some obstruction, presumably by a toy. We paid for the emergency surgery to have the foreign body removed, and we thought everything was going to be okay, but they called at 4AM to let us know that they found this specific toy in his body and that he unfortunately did not survive the procedure. They said a piece did make it through his stomach into his intestines, and as the toy traveled, it caused severe inflammation of the intestines and subsequent swelling of the surrounding lymph nodes. Our kitty never consumed any toy before, and I cannot say why his disinterest at first turned into covert consumption, and it tears me up at night wondering what caused this change in behavior. This toy is too brittle and has too many pieces where it can be torn to shreds. Please, I implore you, do not make the same mistake I did and give this toy to your cat. It could mean saying an early and unexpected goodbye.

Pros
  • Offers an alternative to expensive vet bills for dental checkups
Cons
  • May not be suitable for outdoor use
