I really don't get the point of oversized baggy shorts for men and boys. Why do you need all that extra fabric when you're in the water? There should be a middle ground between swimming trunks and "waterproof cargo shorts". Spotted Zebra's toddler and children's swim shorts for boys are just the ticket. First of all I wouldn't call these swim shorts, they are more like a traditional swim trunk. Next, the size is very true to size. I have the equivalent of an 8 (medium) which is the height of my 7 year old son. He found them comfortable, not constricting the waist or crotch. The mesh inside is not scratched. Mesh is fabric rather than plastic, so it's like underwear, except with tiny holes that allow water to drain and pass through. If they're dry, they shouldn't shrink around your son (you know) and hurt. The stems themselves appear to be very soft. My son loves the camouflage print. I love that I can find any rash guard, black, white etc. If your son is between 8 and 10 I would go with 10. However, I know that my son will not fit these next summer.
