I bought this printer because I wanted a printer with no "extras" like a scanner or fax and initially gave it four stars. This review was removed after having it for a long time and seeing how intrusive the software has become in that time. The problem is how intrusive the software is - five apps are constantly running in the background. There are "HP Solution Center" pop-up reminders to buy new inks, print pop-ups, frequent download updates due to suspected software bugs, etc. I also started receiving regular promotional emails from HP. On-screen pop-ups call and interrupt the application you're working on. Downloading updates seems necessary as my computer and printer often lost "communications" where the computer was unable to access the printer - it often either didn't work at all or printed blank pages. This appears to be a mistake on HP's part as their updates for this printer usually list connectivity as something they are trying to improve. For someone on the modem, the updates are unrealistically large. A recent update was 27 megabytes, took 1 1/2 hours to download, then indicated it was corrupt and the download failed. I ended up uninstalling the software package and then reinstalling just the basic software with a custom install. Since then it has been working more like a normal printer. On the other hand, this printer has an option for more ink capacity with available "xl" version cartridges (although they are quite expensive). The deck ink level sensor is a really nice feature.
