I chose size 3 for the following reasons: I bought size 14 because it's tight pants - my son usually wears 12. They fit partially very unfavorably dense, free in places. Maybe its shape, but I think it's more of a pant cut. They were quite long and a bit baggy at the waist, which I expected given the size. All in all I think they worked as intended :) and I think after washing he can wear them to play so we'll benefit from that. If your son prefers a slim fit I think they will fit.
