Each spool has a plastic defect in the center which is sharp and renders it unusable. I'm sure you could use a thin metal file or other sandpaper or whatever to get rid of it, but why would I pay for something like that? I returned it. As a result, I bought branded products, although they are more expensive. All Revain seem dodgy with similar issues. The scissors seem a bit twitchy, but I don't think there's anything wrong with the tape measure or the needles (although I haven't used them).
