Obviously, the sand floats through the liquid and what causes the sand to fall is gravity. There are bubbles in the liquid that the sand falls through, just like a plinko game. The one I purchased had VERY VERY few bubbles in it. So whenever I flip it upside down the sand all falls at once and just gathers at the bottom. Maybe it's just luck on whether or not you get a good one with lots of bubblesEdit: seller responded with a "replacement or full refund" offer, also offered another practical solution that I'm going to tryEdit: seller suggested adding more air bubbles by use of syringe as there is a small hole on the side of the item for that purpose. Worked perfectly. Smaller syringe the better. Changed from a 2 star to 4 star
