Review on Atolla Standard Adaptor External Positive by George Utley

Revainrating 4 out of 5

No 3 amps at 5 volts

I bought this adapter to work with some old USB 2.0 hubs I have. It is advertised as a 5V 3.0A power supply, and while it delivers a nominal voltage of 5V and can deliver 3 amps; It does NOT support voltage at higher currents. I tested it with a load tester using 2 inch 14 gauge wires (to make sure there was no voltage drop across the test terminals) and got the following: 5.17V @ 200mA; 5.14V at 400mA; 5.08V at 600mA; 5.04V at 800mA; 5.00V at 1A; 4.88V at 1.5A; and 4.78V at 2A. More than 1A - it's hard to characterize it as a suitable power supply for a 5V application - although it depends on the application. Otherwise, the power supply makes a well-made impression. One one-star reviewer stated that this is "not a 'standard' USB hub power supply". But I have found that this is not the case. I have several powered USB hubs and they all use a smaller connector - ID: 1.35mm; Outer Diameter: 3.5mm; Polarity: middle+. It works fine with all my hubs!

Pros
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
