I bought this for my 2.5 year old to use as a toy and counting tool. The colors are nice, they're not too childish, which I appreciate. With the right color combination, they look like decorations for adults from afar. My little one can put beads together, but it takes a few tries with each pair of beads to get it right. This is a great toy for us to play together, but it will probably be too difficult if you let your little one play alone. Montessori beads for that. 500 pearls sounds like a lot, but it's actually enough. The 150 bead and 275 bead sets come in a variety of designs and seem like a great complement to the 500 bead set. The 500-bead container has space for additional beads from the 150-bead set. The size of the holes is not exact meaning some beads will be loose fitting while others will be difficult to insert. But most of these beads work fine, so that's not a problem. I think this is a great open-end toy and I will buy it as a gift for other kids.
