For some tasks, like drawing or watching movies, I remove the font cover because it gets in the way, but if you really need the font, the cover isn't necessary. A software keyboard might suffice in a pinch, but anything more than a very short message requires a full physical keyboard, and it's an exceptionally good keyboard, especially for its size. Also, it acts as a screen protective layer when the device is not in use. Don't waste your money on Alcantara cases, they're no better to use and probably just get dirty quicker.
