This was for my rats who love wooden toys. Arrived in perfect condition. Immediately took off the bells - they don't care about the noise makers and I hate them. I simply used my fingers to loosen the loop at the bottom of the center wire, removed the bell and bent the wire into place. If your wire is particularly stiff, you may need a small pair of pliers. The wood is fine, no foreign smells, no splinters, nothing sharp. I wish I knew for sure that the paint is non-toxic, but rats are tough and short-lived, so I'm less concerned about them than I am about potential bird owners. At least it doesn't peel acrylic, so it's something. I'm not a big fan of the carabiner top style, but that's a personal preference. The toy is a little too long to hang on a shelf in Midwestern Creature Nation, so I hung it on top of the cage and put the box on the bottom tier for them to sit on. So far my boys have enjoyed nibbling on wood. Works great for me.
