Reliable design and safety

My husband and I collected several hours; We wanted to make sure we read the instructions multiple times to understand the names of the parts mentioned and any confusion that might have arisen. For the most part, the instructions were clear and the diagrams helpful. Comments from previous reviewers were also very helpful regarding the hard red wheel straps and proper front wheelbase placement. But we ran into 3 of our own errors. At first we had trouble installing the front wheel piece into the frameโ€”metal to metal. We have found that when wax (from a candle) is waxed onto the sides of the front wheel insert it slides into the frame more easily. Our second problem related to the locking mechanism. It didn't seem to work in the directions advertised - clockwise, counterclockwise, blocking, etc. It was a disappointment, but not a deal breaker. We lined up and secured our 2 bikes as directed, placing the largest first. Neither my husband nor I are very strong but the bikes were pretty easy to install and they seemed reliable after a quick test ride around the block. Our third confusion was the bigger problem for us. When we tried to remove the entire stay from the hitch, it wouldn't budge. We followed the installation instructions and didn't push the stand too far past the silver button as instructed in the instructions. But we had a vision that we would have to live with the meter forever or pay for it to be removed somehow. My husband spent some time looking for helpful videos and was able to find a video that better explained the locking mechanism and how to release the trunk from the hitch. We eventually managed to remove the stand fairly easily, but it took two people and a bit of rocking to do it. Hopefully this process will get easier over time (fingers crossed). The stand is made of solid metal; thick plastic straps are difficult, but fix the wheels well; The spurs for securing the bikes on top work well, and we like the ability to raise the rack when there are no bikes on it. We've added a few of our own bungee cords to keep you safe, but they really may not be needed. But we better feel safe than sorry. We've used it twice for short distances up to 45mph, but I suspect it will feel just as confident at higher speeds. The bikes seem safe and well protected. There are no rattling noises from the luggage rack or the bikes. We look forward to using this well built rack for many years to come and would highly recommend it. but read instructions, reread instructions, watch videos, read instructions over and over again, and take your time.
