The block is solid and all parts are connected with oversized hex bolts. An Allen key was included in the bolt package. Two of the screws are slightly shorter than the others, so make sure you use them in the locations indicated on the assembly drawing. The assembly wasn't that difficult. I had some trouble aligning the holes, but using the long end of the wrench through the hole before trying to tighten the screws made it easier. We have two kittens that use it but they seem to prefer the box it came in. At least for now.
