Review on Imus Seal Butyl Joist Tape: Ultimate Waterproofing Solution for Flashing Deck Joists and Beams (1-5/8” x 50’) by Calvin Reynolds

I recently installed about 800 feet of these on a very large deck we built in Florida. The previous solid wood floor had rotted away. We're replacing this deck with a 25 year old Trex and using ground contact wood for the beams and frames. The previous frame rotted from top to bottom, mostly due to penetration of the bolts that attached the wooden deck. I wanted this deck to have as long a life as possible. As this is brand new I don't know if the joist tape will work for its intended purpose (sealing threaded holes) so my review is based on the quality of the product, ease of use, durability during construction and comments from our decking supplier and the cost compared to its main competitor, which is sold by Trex. It's easy to apply, although sometimes a little butyl remains on hands. Simply remove some backing from one end and leave the end of the label sticking out of the way, tape that end onto the joist, align and place about 3-4 feet of tape on the joist, keeping that end with you your hand. Thumb, return to the tape, pull it to the thumb and stick, smooth the tape with your hand and repeat the process. The contractors said it actually made installing the deck faster because the deck tended to stay in place during installation, the plastic trim caught the hidden plastic fasteners so they didn't move, and after installation the black plastic fasteners were hard to close recognize the black disguise. The tape also held up remarkably well for walking and pulling boards over it, although I did have to do a few repairs. Due to delays in receiving a full order of Trex decking, the tape on part of the board has been in the rain and sun for weeks and still looks good. It's about 30% cheaper than the competitor brand, but I haven't used a competitor's product, so I can't compare the quality. Also, the customer service was excellent. I underestimated the quantity required and the company owner ensured I received a back order in a timely manner and at no extra cost.
