My 40 inch belt measures 39.5 inches from the tip to the end of the belt where the buckle was attached. To use it properly and place the tip of the buckle in the third notch, it fits a 35 inch waist. When I opened the package and put the belt around my waist, there was a gap of about 4 inches between the two ends of the belt.
