Our newly adopted 2 year old tomcat Leo was very hyperactive and playful when we first brought him home. He kept jumping on the kitchen tables, the dining room table, even the giant wall mirror in our living room. We were concerned for his safety - and ours. The vet recommended an apartment for the big cat, which we immediately bought. We ordered a high quality 72 inch flat pre-assembled so we had to wait 2 weeks for the build. In the meantime, I've researched the issue and found that some cats respond well to aluminum foil and duct tape. We tried aluminum foil first because I was concerned that the glue might damage our furniture. From time to time our Leo jumped directly onto the aluminum - the rustling didn't bother him at all. It's time to try the tape. We recorded the strategic points where he jumped the most. One of them was the kitchen window that led to the dining room and through which Leo jumped from the dining room table to the kitchen counter. The other was the wooden backing of a wall mirror, which we thought was his most dangerous adventure. He watched us tape his favorite jump spots. I'm pretty sure he wasn't thrilled about it. He tried jumping on it a few more times over the next few weeks and then I noticed he stopped doing it. During the same period we set up his cat apartment, which he immediately accepted as his den. Looking back, I think the combined effect of adjusting to a new home, new boundaries, and a new sense of security is what made Leo stop jumping. However, I do recommend trying the duct tape on your happy young kitten.
